The use of Ipads in the classrooms directly aligns with Discovery Learning, which is a method of inquiry-based instruction. Discovery learning is rooted in the belief that it is best for learners to both independently and collaboratively discover facts and relationships from intrinsic motivation.

“Bruner’s constructivist learning theory takes place in problem solving situations where the learner draws on his or her own past experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships and new truths to be learned. Students interact with the world by exploring and manipulating objects, wrestling with questions and controversies, or performing experiments. As a result, students may be more likely to remember concepts and knowledge discovered on their own.”

Studies show this theory holds true through use of Ipads in the classrooms. Ipads serve as an ideal tool which allows students to be engaged, independent, or collaborative in their efforts to research school curriculum content. The above embedded video is a wonderful model of Ipads and discovery learning. The above links are great supplemental information regarding the use of Ipads in classrooms.

  1. JoAnn, I am very interested in the use of iPads in the classroom. Students in my district will receive either an iPad or a MacBook as part of a new 1:1 technology initiative. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity but the teachers have so many questions about how it will be integrated. I will be interested in your Blog and links to find out more information on how you use iPads.

  2. We just recently got a set of iPads in our school. My kids do really well with them. I use them as a station all by themselves. However, we are not 100% sure of the best way to go about purchasing apps yet. For now we are using free ones.
